Port Blair is the capital of the Union Territory of Andaman and Nicobar Islands. These Islands are situated in the Bay of Bengal. During the year, 1789 the Government of Bengal established a penal colony on Chatham Island in the south east bay of Great Andaman, named Port Blair. After two years of 1789, this colony shifted to the northeast part of the Great Andaman year. It was named Port Cornwallis after renamed as Admiral William Cornwallis.
History of port Blair is incomplete without mentioning Cellular jail, which is known as 'kala pane' because of the torments and agony faced by the Indian convicts was used to accommodate Indian freedom fighters between 1896 and 1906. During the Second World War, the islands were occupied by the Japanese. There remain remained from 1942 to 1945. After 1947, the islands became a part of the rehabilitation Scheme of the Indian Union and now it is one of the seven union territories of India.
Port Blair is located on the east coast area of South Andaman Island. It is another entry point for visiting the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
The Port Blair Municipal Council has 18 wards, which is now to be extended to 24. The area of the council will increase from 17.74 square kilometers to 41.26 square kilometers. It has been selected as a smart city in the list of 98 smartest cities.
